From May 18th - June 21st, I dug into a new Gotham City Sirens comic, read an amazing short story collection, pondered Mother Mary (2026), loved Zoolander (2001), and entered season 4 of DS9.
The love for HOKUM is appreciated. I feel it achieves what it set out to do better than the two recent financially successful horror films attempted. I really hope this director makes a few more in this style.
I got many reels on my IG about Couples Therapy and I was considering watching some of the latest seasons, but I'm scared of finding out that I dislike everyone and that I dislike it even more when they stay together, so I'm not sure? Haha!
Not everyone stays together. But most of the time when people do I’m like 😬😳 Def made me realize I am very healthy when it comes to my romantic relationships these days lol.
I took my (newly) 5 year old to Whisper of the Heart at our neighborhood art house theatre for an afternoon matinee and he kept whispering “where are the bad guys” until he drifted off to sleep and it was honestly a fairly moving experience. I loved the train sequences so much, and the big quick burst of surrealism near end of the movie was satisfying in its suddenness, after the movie had stayed so close to realism during most of the rest of its runtime.
Mother Mary was such a snoozer! I also noticed and disliked the racial dynamics.
Finally, just saw Fucktoys at the same theatre…now that’s a movie that knows how to think about fantasy and power w/r/t racial dynamics.
I really enjoyed reading this piece. Insightful and a good blend of personal opinion and critical thought. I admire how you are so succinct. I'm going to try and find 'Police Story' to watch. The first films I remember seeing were Kung Fu films my mother took me to as a child. I do love an action/martial arts film where the stunts are REAL.
'DS9' and 'Voyager' were my favourites in the Star Trek universe. In fact the only ones I've seen in their entirety. DS9 because it was set on a space station and they weren't exploring new worlds. Life came to them. 'Voyager' because of Janeway. In some ways she is a quite camp & theatrical leader.

DS9 is definitely the best Star Trek ever has been or will be. I'm not a big Voyager fan. But I do find some of it quite fascinating, especially Janeway. She's kinda wild as a captain.

However 'Police Story' is showing on a free, on demand TV channel. With ads (hate ads) so I will Nana knit while I watch. Your work here is done.
I saw The Whole Bloody Affair on film last fall, which was exciting! but yeaaa the film loses so much steam by the last few sequences. agree - the Fox and Liu scenes are ELECTRIC!

Hard agree! I like the vibe the filmmaker cultivates. Fun, pulpy, and to the point.

I've been curious to see Fucktoys. I've heard a lot of good things about that film. I'll put it a little higher in my need-to-watch list.
